Rice and Gravy

Written by John Teague

Oh, eighty-six,

I remember  The first time I saw my mother’s eyes

Then it’s rice and gravy, corn and coffee, biscuits and beer

For eighteen years on a county Line

Burning bridges so fast

Oh the memories how they last

Pissed off some folks, made some jokes

There’s nothin’ we didn’t try

Thank God we made it out alive

Steel toes and hardhats

Them Port Arthur boys have no fear

All this rice and gravy, corn and coffee, biscuits and beer

Just tryin’ to make livin’ ‘round here

Sweet Momma she prays

That her man survives the day

He makes it home, his back is blown

Put the kids to bed

Wake up and do it all again

Saddle up, it’s Friday

The rest of the week is now done

All this rice and gravy, corn and coffee, biscuits and beer

Has got me an appetite for having fun

Chase the moon into the sun

Chase a shot with another one

Then it’s Waffle House, slurring mouth

Order me some grits

If they can’t understand us

Well we don’t give a shit
